Judge Waverly D. Crenshaw Jr. Clarifies Order in Memphis Schools Takeover Dispute
Judge Waverly D. Crenshaw Jr. has clarified his previous order regarding the state takeover of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) system. A July order from Judge Crenshaw had been interpreted as a temporary halt to the takeover legislation. However, Judge Crenshaw has now stated that he 'didn’t mean to imply' that the new state-appointed board could not proceed with its work. He further indicated that he would lift the temporary order once the new board chair certifies that the board is fully operational. In a related development, MSCS and the Shelby County government have filed a second lawsuit in Shelby County Chancery Court, reiterating claims made in an existing federal suit before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. Additionally, Judge Crenshaw has dismissed Governor Bill Lee and other state leaders from the federal case.
