South Korean Man Awarded Ownership of Unclaimed Cash Found in Trash Bag
A man in his 60s in Incheon, South Korea, has been granted ownership of 25 million won (approximately US$18,580) he discovered in a trash bag. The money, found on February 10 near a residential building in Geumgok-dong, remained unclaimed for six months despite extensive efforts by the police to locate the original owner. The cash was found in five bundles of 50,000 won bills, each containing 100 notes and wrapped with Bank of Korea bands, hidden beneath clothing in a 20-liter trash bag. Following the discovery, the man immediately reported it to the police. Authorities conducted a thorough investigation, including reviewing surveillance footage, performing fingerprint analysis, visiting numerous homes, and posting notices on the national lost-and-found portal and in a local newspaper. However, no one came forward to claim the money within the stipulated period. Consequently, under South Korea’s Lost Articles Act, ownership of the lost property transferred to the finder.
