Alabama Residents Unable to Halt Bitcoin Mining Facility Due to Zoning Law Gaps
In Somerville, Morgan County, Alabama, a new Bitcoin mining facility by VoltCore is proceeding despite local opposition and moratoriums. The lack of applicable zoning laws in the county, due to Alabama's Dillon's Rule, which limits zoning authority to counties with populations over 600,000, has left residents powerless to stop the construction. Although both the county and the town of Somerville have enacted moratoriums against the facility, these cannot legally prevent the buildout on private land. The facility has already secured an energy connection from the Tennessee Valley Authority, and construction is underway. Local residents have initiated petitions and a GoFundMe campaign to hire legal assistance, but the legal framework currently offers little recourse.
