Marika Gerrard, Pioneering Aerial News Camera Operator, Recognized for Contributions to Journalism
Marika Gerrard, an American media producer and camera operator, is recognized for her pioneering work in aerial breaking-news coverage. Born in Los Angeles, Gerrard established a career that combined journalism, filming, and television production. She gained prominence through her collaboration with her former husband, Zoey Tur (formerly Bob Tur), with whom she co-founded the Los Angeles News Service. Together, they utilized helicopters to capture major events from unique aerial perspectives, including the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the O. J. Simpson police chase. Gerrard's work behind the camera in a helicopter required significant concentration and adaptability to unpredictable news situations. Her contributions earned her and Zoey Tur several accolades, including three Television News Emmy Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award. Gerrard is also known as the mother of journalist Katy Tur and James Tur, who pursued a career in medicine.
