Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford recently discussed the importance of open primaries and election reform on the program 'Across the Aisle.' Rutherford, along with former state Sen. Bobby Zirkin, highlighted the growing influence of the two major political parties and the need for greater political independence. Rutherford is challenging Maryland's closed-primary system through a lawsuit, arguing that it disenfranchises nearly a quarter of the state's registered voters who are unaffiliated with a political party. He contends that taxpayers should not fund elections that exclude eligible voters, especially in districts where the primary effectively determines the general election winner.
