HBO Documentary 'The Yogurt Shop Murders' Identifies Killer Through DNA, Exonerating Previously Accused Men
HBO Documentary Films' four-part series, 'The Yogurt Shop Murders,' which explored the brutal unsolved murders of four teenage girls in Austin, Texas, in December 1991, has received a dramatic, real-time update. Filmmaker Margaret Brown, who directed the series, was compelled to create a fifth follow-up episode after new DNA evidence identified the true killer, Robert Eugene Brashers, who is now deceased. This breakthrough exonerated four men—Forrest Welborn, Robert Springsteen, Michael Scott, and Maurice Pierce—who had been previously accused, with three serving prison sentences ranging from three to ten years. The DNA match was found under the fingernail of one of the victims, a significant development given the initial crime scene was compromised by fire and water, leaving microscopic amounts of DNA.
