Russia Reverts to Older Fuel Standards Amid Domestic Shortages
The Russian government has authorized the production, import, and sale of motor gasoline meeting older environmental standards (Euro-2, Euro-3, and Euro-4) until July 1, 2027. This decision comes as ongoing attacks have reduced Russian gasoline production to 65% of average domestic consumption, with diesel output barely meeting demand. The move aims to prevent domestic fuel shortages caused by supply chain disruptions and technological constraints. The government has also banned diesel exports and increased fuel imports from Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, and Morocco to manage the deficit. The relaxation of fuel standards allows refineries to process naphtha without deep processing, though it may not be safe for modern vehicles.
