Russia Establishes New Drone Bases Near NATO Borders, Raising European Security Concerns
Russia is reportedly establishing or upgrading ten drone bases near its borders with Belarus and Ukraine, as well as with NATO member states Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. European intelligence reports, shared with The Telegraph, indicate that these bases include nearly 60 newly constructed launch rails designed to support strike drone operations. These developments suggest Russia's intent to enhance its drone warfare capabilities, potentially enabling swarm drone attacks against Ukraine and even NATO member states. The drones launched from these bases could have a range of hundreds of miles, theoretically reaching non-frontline states such as Germany or Sweden. NATO has acknowledged these developments, stating that it "closely monitors Russian military activity, including its long-range strike and drone capabilities," and is investing approximately €34 billion ($40 billion) over the next five years in counter-drone systems and training.
