President Trump Urges Court to Reject BBC's Subpoena Bid in Defamation Lawsuit
President Trump has asked a federal judge to deny the BBC's request for court assistance in obtaining testimony and documents from his family members—Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump Jr.—in connection with his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the British broadcaster. Trump's personal lawyers argue that the BBC is attempting to gain 'politically-driven leverage' by serving these subpoenas. The lawsuit, filed in December, alleges that the BBC deceptively edited portions of President Trump's January 6, 2021, speech, intentionally misrepresenting his statements. The BBC had previously attempted to serve subpoenas in person, but these attempts were unsuccessful, leading them to seek court permission for service via certified mail. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Kuntz, who was nominated by President Trump, is currently presiding over the dispute, which was recently reassigned to him. A trial date has been set for February.
