Facebook Whistleblower Frances Haugen Urges AI Firms to Uphold White House Safety Pact's Spirit
Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen has called on artificial intelligence (AI) companies to adhere to the spirit of their self-regulation agreement with the White House. Her remarks came days after Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives signed the pact. In an interview on Friday, Haugen emphasized that companies must 'step up and comply,' noting that tech firms often follow only the exact written text of agreements, potentially exploiting loopholes in 'very flexible systems.' She expressed doubt that AI firms would uphold the 'spirit of the rules,' suggesting they might 'go around the end of the fence' by doing what is not explicitly prohibited. Haugen did, however, praise Anthropic and its CEO Dario Amodei for advocating for independent auditors, indicating a more proactive approach to safety concerns within some AI companies.
