Turkmenistan Expands Natural Gas Production and Export Capabilities While Addressing Methane Emissions
Turkmenistan is actively working to reduce methane emissions across its oil and gas infrastructure, collaborating with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). This initiative has led to the elimination of emissions at eight sources, including pipelines, wells, and flares, which previously released over 27,000 tons of methane annually. Concurrently, Turkmenistan is expanding its natural gas production and export potential. The Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project is progressing, with the Turkmen-Afghan section expected to be completed by the end of 2026, aiming for gas supplies to Pakistan by 2027. Additionally, the fourth phase of development at the Galkynysh field is planned to increase processing capacity by 10 billion cubic meters of marketable gas per year. The country also aims to increase gas exports to China via the Turkmenistan-China pipeline to 65 billion cubic meters per year and is exploring options for exporting gas to Europe via Azerbaijan.
