Oklahoma Attorney General Seeks ATF Clarification on Federal Firearms Act Ruling
Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond has formally requested written guidance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regarding the enforcement of certain provisions of the National Firearms Act (NFA). This request follows an August 5 ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas in the case of Silencer Shop Foundation, et al. v. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, et al. The court determined that the NFA's registration and application requirements for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, and other specific weapons exceeded Congress's authority under Article I of the U.S. Constitution. Oklahoma was among 15 plaintiff states in the lawsuit, and the court issued a permanent injunction preventing the enforcement of these challenged provisions against these states.
