YouTube Tests Desktop Redesign, Moving Comments to Sidebar Amid User Criticism
YouTube is currently testing a new desktop interface that relocates the comments section and video details into a right-hand sidebar. This change also places larger recommendation thumbnails directly beneath the video player. This experimental layout is being rolled out to a wider audience on the web and has generated significant dissatisfaction among users. Many viewers report that this configuration creates a cluttered and cramped desktop experience, distracting from the main content. The placement of active discussions in an immediate side drawer also makes it difficult to avoid spoilers. This is not the first time YouTube has experimented with this design; an identical layout was tested in 2024, initially for YouTube Premium subscribers, but was retracted due to community criticism. Despite developers' claims that UI updates aim to improve engagement and reduce clutter, desktop users continue to resist the condensed presentation.
