Vietnamese Police Arrest 12 in Cat Theft Ring for Meat Trade
Police in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, have arrested 12 men suspected of operating a citywide ring that stole and resold approximately 2,700 cats for meat. Luu Thanh Binh, 39, has been identified as the alleged leader of the network. Investigators reported that Binh purchased stolen cats, housed them in a facility in the city's north, and then resold them for meat. His suppliers recruited individuals to ride motorcycles through residential areas between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., trapping four to ten cats nightly. During a raid on July 8, police discovered about 50 cats and dozens of traps. While 13 confiscated cats were returned to their owners, a nonprofit animal rights group is caring for the remaining animals as authorities work to identify their owners. In a separate incident in June, police rescued over 400 cats, with 40 reunited with owners, but also found dozens of dead cats packed in ice.
