U.S. State Department Issues 'Do Not Travel' Warning for Northern Mozambique Due to Terrorist Threats
The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory for Mozambique, placing several northern areas, including Cabo Delgado Province and parts of Niassa and northern Nampula, under a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' warning. This advisory is due to active terrorist groups in the region that may strike public areas and tourist destinations with little to no warning, sometimes taking hostages. The overall country remains at Level 2, advising citizens to 'Exercise Increased Caution.' Other nations, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and South Korea, have issued similar warnings for these areas, citing Islamist-linked attacks, terrorism, kidnapping, and armed clashes. The militant presence, described as a 'spectacularly nasty' ISIS group by foreign correspondent Alex Perry, has severely impacted the high-end safari and hunting tourism industry in these remote northern regions.
