Irish Authorities Discover Remains of 22 More Babies at Former Institution Site, Total Reaches 99
Authorities in Ireland have uncovered the remains of 22 additional babies at the site of a former institution for unmarried mothers and their children, increasing the total number of bodies found to 99. The site, known as the former Mother and Baby Institution, was operated by the Bon Secours Sisters from 1925 to 1961. The Office of the Director of Authorized Intervention at Tuam (ODAIT) announced the discovery, which was made in an area historically identified as a burial ground. The site had been covered with asphalt and gravel, used as a driveway, with no surface markers indicating the presence of burials. The recovery effort began in 2025 following investigations that revealed 796 infants and young children died at the institution, many without recorded burial sites. The newly recovered remains will undergo forensic examination to determine the children's ages, gender, and possible identities. The excavation is expected to continue until 2027.
