Romanian Military Destroys Explosive Drone Boat Near Offshore Gas Platform, Blames Russia
The Romanian military successfully destroyed an explosive drone boat near a vital European natural gas platform in the Black Sea, with Romania's president directly blaming Russia for the incident. On August 20, the Romanian Coast Guard initially spotted the maritime drone close to the Neptun Deep project's main drilling platform, where hundreds of workers were engaged in installation activities. Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated that an F-16 fighter jet was scrambled to disable the drone with cannon fire to protect the workers and the offshore gas infrastructure. Subsequently, explosive ordnance experts carried out a controlled detonation of the drone, which was reportedly carrying explosives. This marks the second such incident this month involving suspected Russian drones near the Neptun Deep site, following the destruction of two Russian-made flying drones on August 11.
