Geri Halliwell's Great-Grandfather Executed After Spanish Civil War for Socialist Activism
Geri Halliwell, a member of the Spice Girls, has a family history rooted in Córdoba, Spain, revealing that her great-grandfather, Emiliano Hidalgo Fernández, was executed after the Spanish Civil War. Hidalgo, who served as the Republican mayor of Dos Torres during the Second Republic, was shot by a firing squad on December 27, 1940, at the age of 61, in Córdoba's Cemetery of La Salud. He was arrested in May 1939 and subsequently faced a court-martial due to his socialist activism and his role during the Civil War. The 116-page case file described him as the 'founder of the Socialist Party' in Dos Torres and characterized his actions as 'subversive and revolutionary.' He was also identified as a leader who opposed the 1936 military coup and was labeled a 'Marxist leader' who acted against what Francoists termed the 'glorious movement.' Despite some accusations lacking direct proof of his responsibility, he was sentenced to death for 'adhering to the military rebellion.'
