Swim Across America Raises Over $150 Million for Cancer Research, Funding FDA-Approved Immunotherapies
Swim Across America, an organization founded in 1987, has successfully raised over $150 million for cancer research. These funds have been instrumental in supporting clinical trials that led to the development of several FDA-approved cancer immunotherapy medications. Recently, the organization held its second annual Michigan Pool Swim at the University of Michigan, raising money for the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center. This event, combined with the Motor City Mile, contributed $152,000 this year, surpassing a goal of $30,000 for the Michigan Pool Swim. Emily Klueh, a former University of Michigan swimmer and volunteer with Swim Across America, shared her personal experience, crediting the research funded by such organizations for her recovery from Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, which involved 20 tumors. She emphasized that the medication she received was FDA-approved less than 10 years ago, highlighting the rapid advancements in cancer treatment supported by these fundraising efforts.
