US Trade and Development Agency Funds Turkish SMR Deployment Roadmap
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has signed an agreement with Turkey's state-owned nuclear development enterprise, TÜNAŞ, to provide funding for technical assistance. This assistance aims to create a comprehensive regulatory, institutional, and financial roadmap for Turkish private sector companies to deploy Small Modular Reactor (SMR) nuclear technology. Turkey has set a target to deploy 5000 MWe of SMR capacity by 2050, in addition to 12 larger reactors. The USTDA's support will identify necessary policy and investment steps, producing recommendations for Turkey's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Authority to establish a clear framework for SMR deployment. The agreement, with a budget of approximately $2 million, will also include a review of how U.S. reactor designs can meet Turkey's energy needs.
