Representative Vern Buchanan Reintroduces Critically Endangered Animals Conservation Act
Representative Vern Buchanan, co-chair of the Animal Protection Caucus in Congress, has reintroduced the Critically Endangered Animals Conservation Act. This bipartisan bill aims to support global conservation efforts for the world's most endangered species. Buchanan stated that 'Allowing a species to become extinct is a tragedy, and we should do everything in our power to prevent it from happening.' The bill proposes the establishment of the Critically Endangered Animals Conservation Fund, to be administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of its Multinational Species Conservation Funds. It authorizes $5 million annually from fiscal year 2027 through 2032. The fund will specifically target International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List species not currently covered by existing multinational funds, including species such as snow leopards, Andean cats, African penguins, and the white-backed vulture. The legislation is supported by numerous conservation organizations.
