Texas Court Mandates Hospitals to Provide Care for Baby in Surrogacy Dispute
A Texas district court has ordered UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas to provide lifesaving care for a baby named Gabriel, who is due to be born to surrogate mother McKenna West. The baby has been diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a serious condition requiring medical intervention. The intended parents, Nausheen Gilkar and Omar Ahmed, have expressed a desire to refuse consent for an operation and potentially move the child to California to withhold treatment. The court's decision mandates that upon birth, the baby must receive medically indicated stabilizing and life-sustaining care at the designated hospitals. The court also prohibited the removal of the child from the hospitals or the state of Texas, except for necessary medical care.
