Des Moines Halts Downtown Soccer Stadium Project Due to Budget Shortfall
The City of Des Moines has terminated seven years of negotiations with the Krause Group regarding a proposed downtown soccer stadium. The decision stems from a significant funding gap, primarily caused by recent property tax legislation. This legislation is projected to create a $12 million budget shortfall for the city in Fiscal Year 2028 and an additional $5 million gap in Fiscal Year 2029. The stadium project, estimated to cost around $90 million, was planned for the former DICO Superfund site, a 43-acre property south of downtown Des Moines that has been vacant since 1995. Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen stated that the economic opportunities presented by the stadium and its surrounding district no longer outweigh the city's inability to responsibly commit to the previously considered terms, given the new financial constraints. The city took ownership of the DICO site in May 2021, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began removing buildings from the contaminated site that summer.
