Extreme Heat and Fire Risk Grip Los Angeles County
Los Angeles County is bracing for a week of dangerous heat, with most of the region under an extreme heat warning. The National Weather Service has also issued a red flag fire warning for interior portions of southwest California, including Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 108°F (42°C) in lower mountains, foothills, and the Cuyama Valley. The combination of extreme heat, gusty winds, and low humidity poses a significant risk of wildfires. Local agencies, including the Los Angeles County Fire Department, are augmenting staffing and pre-positioning resources to ensure rapid response to potential emergencies. Cooling centers across the city have extended operating hours to provide relief for residents, while elevated surf and rip currents at beaches increase the risk of ocean drownings.
