Mayor Brandon Johnson Faces Activist Pressure Over Quantum Computing Campus in Chicago
Mayor Brandon Johnson encountered significant opposition from anti-data center activists at a recent 'Community Over Quantum' event on Chicago's South Side. The activists expressed strong disapproval of the proposed 'Quantum Shore' development, a massive project that includes the Illinois Quantum & Microelectronics Park. Despite Johnson's recent executive order to regulate data centers more strictly and his call for a moratorium on new data center construction, the crowd booed his responses and chanted for him to shut down the quantum center development. Johnson stated his commitment to ensuring the development does not negatively impact working people and mentioned receiving a letter from developers assuring him that the first phase of the project would not include a data center. However, activists remain unconvinced, highlighting that the executive order does not prevent the quantum facility itself.
