Extreme Heat Dome to Bring 100°F+ Temperatures Across U.S. This Weekend
A sprawling heat dome is set to impact millions across the central and western United States this weekend, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels. According to AccuWeather, areas in the Dakotas, Arizona, California, and the Plains will experience temperatures near or above 100°F (37.8°C). The most extreme heat is expected in California's Coachella Valley, where temperatures could reach up to 120°F (48.9°C). Cities like Phoenix, Arizona, may see highs between 107°F (41.7°C) and 116°F (46.7°C), while parts of the Plains and Midwest, including Kansas City and Minneapolis, could also approach or exceed 100°F (37.8°C). High humidity will exacerbate conditions, with heat index values—what it 'feels like'—ranging from 105°F (40.6°C) to 110°F (43.3°C). The heat dome is caused by a high-pressure system trapping hot air and suppressing cloud formation, leading to prolonged heat waves.
