California Prison Towns Face Economic Crisis Following State-Mandated Closures
California prison towns, such as Susanville and Blythe, are grappling with severe economic challenges and population decline following state-mandmandated prison closures. Governor Gavin Newsom has closed five prisons since 2019, leading to significant job losses and a shrinking tax base in these communities. Susanville, which saw its prison closure announced in 2021, experienced a population drop from 16,000 to 14,000 by 2024, with the elementary school losing 10% of its students. Blythe, where the Chuckwalla Valley State Prison closed in 2022, has seen its population fall from 18,000 to 17,400. These towns, which historically built their economies around the prison industry, are now struggling to attract new businesses and industries, facing issues like limited infrastructure, higher taxes compared to neighboring states, and a lack of a substantial workforce.
