DOJ and State Officials Announce Major Fraud Enforcement Efforts in Southeast
The Department of Justice (DOJ) and state officials have announced significant fraud enforcement actions across South Carolina and the Southeast. During a press conference, DOJ Assistant Attorney General Colin MacDonald revealed that the National Fraud Enforcement Division has charged 12 individuals with fraud involving taxpayer-funded programs, resulting in over $90 million in losses. Notable cases include a $20 million food stamp scheme in Miami and a $1.5 million charter school embezzlement in Louisiana. The DOJ has signed data-sharing agreements with 10 state agencies to enhance fraud detection. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and Attorney General Alan Wilson praised the collaborative model, likening it to successful past operations. Other highlighted cases involve a $65 million green energy tax credit scam in Alabama and a $25 million COVID tax break scheme in North Carolina.
