North Carolina Offers $300 Million Incentive to Revive I-77 Toll Lane Project
North Carolina transportation leaders have proposed a $300 million incentive package to revive the I-77 South toll lane project. This comes after the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) withdrew its support for the project. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has indicated that municipalities represented by CRTPO might need to reimburse over $60 million already spent on planning and development, with Charlotte potentially responsible for $40 million. The incentive package aims to address long-standing concerns and rebuild trust, particularly in west Charlotte communities affected by past I-77 construction. Proposed benefits include green spaces, bike lanes, public art, and efforts to improve food access in food deserts.
