NC Attorney General Accuses Duke Energy of Misleading Rate Hike Information
North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson has accused Duke Energy of providing misleading information under oath regarding a proposed rate hike. During a testimony before the North Carolina Utilities Commission, Kendal Bowman, President of Duke Energy Progress and Duke Energy Carolinas, stated that residential customers would see a 6.8% rate increase over two years. However, Jackson's office claims the actual increase for residential customers would be 9.3%, as the 6.8% figure includes industrial users who pay less. Jackson criticized the proposed increase, stating it was already too high and unjustifiable. Despite reaching a settlement with the Utilities Commission's Public Staff for a 3.4% average annual increase, Jackson has refused to sign the agreement, although his approval is not required for the commission's decision.
