North Carolina Community College System Selects New Leader Amidst DEI Controversy
The State Board of Community Colleges in North Carolina has selected Monty Sullivan to lead the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) after a national search. Sullivan, who previously headed the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) for 12 years, is awaiting confirmation by the General Assembly, which may be delayed until after the November midterm elections. His selection has drawn scrutiny due to his past support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. During his tenure in Louisiana, Sullivan implemented an employee evaluation process with a required DEI component and publicly criticized a resolution seeking data on DEI and Critical Race Theory (CRT) spending, calling it a 'racist instrument.' This stance contrasts with North Carolina's legislative landscape, where Governor Josh Stein's veto of Senate Bill 558, which prohibits such ideologies in higher education, was overridden.
