Five Tornadoes Confirmed in Illinois and Indiana Following Severe Weather Outbreak
The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that at least five tornadoes touched down in Illinois and Indiana during a severe weather outbreak on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Among the confirmed tornadoes, an EF-0 tornado with winds between 65-85 mph struck Oswego, Illinois, at approximately 10:15 a.m. An EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 90 mph was reported in Wilmington, Illinois. Three additional tornadoes, all rated EF-1 with winds between 86-110 mph, were confirmed in Chicago's southern suburbs, including Oak Forest, Flossmoor, and Mokena. Additionally, a tornado in Will County, Illinois, that extended into Crown Point, Indiana, was upgraded to EF-2 status, with winds between 111-135 mph. The NWS continues to survey storm damage in the region. Cleanup efforts are underway as power outages persist for hundreds of thousands of residents.
