Congresswoman Nikema Williams Secures $700,000 Grant for Atlanta Community Schoolyards
Congresswoman Nikema Williams, alongside Senators Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, has secured a $700,000 grant to fund the construction of two new Community Schoolyards within Atlanta Public Schools (APS). This initiative, in partnership with the Trust for Public Land (TPL), aims to transform underutilized school spaces into recreational areas for students and the broader community. Crawford Long Middle School is slated to be the 15th community schoolyard site, with students actively participating in the design process. The project addresses the lack of accessible public parks in historically underrepresented communities, ensuring safe gathering spaces. TPL, an organization with over 50 years of experience in creating parks and preserving land, has been active in Georgia since 2018. The total process for each schoolyard is expected to take approximately 18 months, with the Long Middle School project anticipated to be ready by the end of 2027.
