LA Woman Avoids Five-Year Prison Sentence After Admitting to Illegal Voter Registration Scheme
Brenda Lee Brown Armstrong, also known as 'Anika,' a 64-year-old woman from Marina Del Rey, has admitted to an illegal voter registration scheme but avoided a five-year prison sentence. She pleaded guilty to one felony count of paying individuals to register to vote in a federal election. Armstrong was sentenced to 18 months of probation and 120 hours of community service by U.S. District Judge Mark C. Scarsi. Prosecutors alleged that Armstrong targeted homeless individuals on Skid Row, offering them $2 or $3 to sign petitions and even allowing them to use her address for voter registration, which could lead to mail-in ballots being sent to her home. She reportedly worked as a petition collector for various vendors and individuals, receiving payment for each registered voter's signature. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon emphasized that such false registrations undermine faith in elections.
