Foreclosure Rates Surge Nationwide, Disproportionately Affecting Homeowners of Color
A recent analysis by ABC News and ABC Owned Television Stations reveals a significant increase in foreclosure filings across the United States, with a 71% rise between 2020 and 2025. The data highlights that Florida leads in the number of yearly foreclosure filings per ZIP code, followed by states like New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada. The report underscores the economic pressures faced by homeowners, such as higher mortgage rates, increased property taxes, and the cessation of pandemic-era protections, which have contributed to this surge. Notably, the analysis points out that homeowners of color are disproportionately affected, with foreclosure rates in majority non-white ZIP codes being more than three times the national average. This trend is attributed to these communities being targeted for unfavorable loan terms.
