Sterling Heights Elementary Teacher Honored with Detroit Lions Touchdown for Teacher Award
Jennifer Jurmo, a kindergarten teacher at Willow Woods Elementary School in Sterling Heights, was surprised with the Detroit Lions Touchdown for Teacher award during a school assembly. Unbeknownst to her, NFL representatives, the Detroit Lions mascot 'Roary,' cheerleaders, and her family were present to celebrate her dedication to education. Principal Vera Ivezaj had kept the recognition a secret for weeks. Jurmo, who has been teaching for over 20 years, including 12 at Willow Woods, received a $3,000 classroom grant and tickets to an upcoming Detroit Lions game where she will be formally recognized. Former and current students praised her kindness and positive impact. Jurmo is also a two-time cancer survivor, a journey she says has given her perspective on life and her career.
