Representative Julia Letlow Proposes Bill Requiring Federal Officials to Experience I-10 Traffic Before Denying Louisiana Road Funding
U.S. Representative Julia Letlow announced plans to introduce legislation that would mandate federal officials to spend a Friday afternoon on I-10 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, before they are permitted to deny requests for additional road funding for the state. According to Letlow, the proposed bill would require federal transportation officials to enter I-10 shortly before 4 p.m. with a full tank of gas, a phone charger, and no urgent commitments for the evening. They would be required to travel from one side of Baton Rouge to the other without exiting the interstate or approving emergency infrastructure funding from their vehicles. Letlow stated that this experience, which typically involves four to six hours of traffic with minimal movement, would provide sufficient data on the traffic conditions. Federal officials have reportedly criticized the requirement as unnecessarily cruel.
