Don Huffines Sworn in as Texas Comptroller, Announces School Voucher Program Update
Don Huffines has been sworn in as the Texas comptroller, taking over the role as the state's chief financial officer. On his first day, Huffines announced that over 85,000 students have been funded through Texas' new $1 billion school voucher program for the 2026-27 school year. The program, known as the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), is the third largest education savings account initiative in the country. Huffines, who is also running for a full term in the upcoming election, emphasized his commitment to cutting wasteful spending and providing property tax relief. He also announced his decision to refuse the state salary for the comptroller position.
