U.S. Mint Presents 2,983 9/11 Privy Half Dollars to National 9/11 Memorial Museum
The United States Mint has presented 2,983 specially struck 1776 ~ 2026 Enduring Liberty half dollars, each featuring a 9/11 privy mark, to the National 9/11 Memorial & Museum. This mintage number corresponds to the 2,983 names inscribed on the Memorial, honoring those who died in the September 11, 2001, attacks and the February 26, 1993, World Trade Center bombing. These coins were produced at the West Point Mint in New York, distinguishing them from regular circulating half dollars made in Philadelphia and Denver. The obverse of these special coins includes a privy mark with the date '9-11-01' encircled by 'ALWAYS REMEMBER,' a phrase previously used on the Mint's 2011 September 11 National Medal, and a 'W' mint mark for West Point. Mint Director Paul Hollis stated that the coin represents the nation's strength in looking forward, both 250 years ago at its founding and 25 years ago after the attacks, emphasizing remembrance and honor for the victims.
