North Carolina Secures Up to $645 Million in Landmark Child Safety Settlement with Meta

North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson, alongside 51 bipartisan attorneys general, has reached a landmark settlement with Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook. This agreement will see Meta pay North Carolina up to $645 million, with a guaranteed minimum of $451 million, and implement significant child safety upgrades to its platforms. The total settlement across all states could reach up to $17.1 billion, marking the second-largest state consumer protection settlement in history and the largest ever against a big tech company. The lawsuit, initiated in October 2023 by North Carolina under then-Attorney General Josh Stein, alleged that Meta violated state consumer protection laws by designing its apps to maximize engagement from children while downplaying associated risks.
