Minnesota DNR Warns Boaters of Challenges Due to Low Water Levels Amidst Severe Drought
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued an advisory to boaters regarding significant challenges at public water access sites across the state. Ongoing drought conditions have led to critically low water levels, impacting boat launching and retrieval. Nearly all of Minnesota is experiencing some level of drought, with 48% of the state classified under severe drought conditions, according to the DNR’s drought webpage. This situation particularly affects fall boaters, especially those operating larger watercraft with longer trailers, who may encounter difficulties at shallow boat ramps. The low water levels also expose previously submerged obstructions such as stumps, rocks, holes, and sandbars, which can be damaged by power loading. While the DNR is working to repair and extend boat ramps where feasible, options to address these access challenges are limited on many lakes.
