Chinese Man Discovers Unclaimed Pension of Over 420,000 Yuan After Decades
A 71-year-old Chinese man, Mr. Lu, who had been collecting scrap materials for 21 years, recently discovered a pension account containing approximately 420,000 yuan (about $58,000 USD). Mr. Lu, who worked for 30 years at a state-owned store in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, was laid off in the early 2000s due to restructuring. Believing he was ineligible for a pension without purchasing separate long-term insurance, which he could not afford, he became isolated from society and unaware of the national pension system. His employer had, in fact, deducted insurance premiums from his salary during his 30 years of employment. He became eligible for his pension in 2015 upon reaching retirement age. The discovery was made when social welfare workers in Changde, Hunan Province, assisted him in applying for social security assistance, leading to the issuance of a bank card linked to his pension account.
