Portland Parent Sues School District Over Gender Identity Curriculum and Event Ban
Allison Roberts, a mother in Portland, Oregon, has filed a lawsuit against Portland Public Schools and Meriwether Lewis Elementary School. The lawsuit, filed by the Liberty Justice Center, alleges retaliation against Roberts after she voiced opposition to the school's gender identity curriculum. Roberts initially raised concerns last year when the school repainted its rainbow pride flag to an 'Intersex-Inclusive Progress' variant, which she felt promoted values contradictory to her Christian faith, particularly regarding transgenderism. Her concerns escalated after her 11-year-old child was given an 'identity flower' assignment that prompted discussions about gender identity without prior parental notification. Following an unsatisfactory response from the school, Roberts distributed an open letter criticizing the school's policies on a public sidewalk.
