Study Links Major Album Releases by Artists like Harry Styles to Increased Traffic Fatalities in the U.S.
A new study published in the scientific journal JAMA Network Open suggests a correlation between the release of highly anticipated music albums and an increase in traffic fatalities in the United States. The research, which analyzed data from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2022, found that daily music streaming volumes surged by 43% on days when major albums, such as Bad Bunny's 'Un Verano Sin Ti,' Taylor Swift's 'Midnights,' and Harry Styles' 'Harry's House,' were released. Concurrently, the number of road accident victims on these days was higher than on normal days, with an increase of up to 15% in fatal car accidents. The study identified young male drivers, often driving alone in cars equipped with multimedia and connectivity systems (USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, telephony, and GPS), as the primary profile of victims. Notably, in the analyzed accidents, drivers had not consumed alcohol or drugs, and weather conditions were favorable, suggesting driver distraction as a key factor.
