BP's Whiting refinery in Indiana is experiencing a nearly five-month labor lockout involving approximately 800 workers represented by United Steelworkers Local 7-1. The lockout began after union members rejected BP's contract proposal, which included wage freezes and job cuts. The union accuses BP of attempting to undermine collective bargaining and union power, drawing parallels to a similar lockout at ExxonMobil's Texas refinery. BP, however, claims its proposals are standard and necessary for operational safety. The lockout has left workers without pay, forcing them to seek temporary employment and rely on community support.
