San Francisco Library Preserves LGBTQ Children's Literature Amid Book Bans
The Mechanics’ Institute in San Francisco has acquired the Tarpey-Schwed LGBT Families Collection, a significant archive of over 200 children's books featuring LGBTQ themes. This collection, spanning from 1969 to 2023, aims to preserve these works as historical documents amid increasing book bans targeting LGBTQ literature. The collection includes pioneering titles that depict families with LGBTQ members, providing a sanctuary for these stories in a climate where such books are frequently challenged. The library's initiative underscores the importance of preserving diverse narratives for future generations.
