AAEC Condemns Baltimore Sun's Use of Artificial Intelligence for Editorial Cartoons
The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) has issued an open letter to The Baltimore Sun, strongly condemning the newspaper's use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the creation of editorial cartoons and other editorial content. The letter, signed by AAEC President Marc Murphy, asserts that the newspaper's decision to use AI for such content signifies a complete surrender of its journalistic legitimacy and its historical standing among important national newspapers. The AAEC's statement highlights concerns that AI's use in this context constitutes theft from artists, contributes to the misuse of planetary resources, and poses a significant threat to original, creative thought. The organization views this move as a cost-cutting measure that paves the way for an America that outsources its most important human work, ultimately leading to a decline in journalistic integrity and artistic expression.
