Illinois Tornadoes Shatter Records in 2026 with 221 Reports by July
Illinois has experienced an unprecedented surge in tornado activity in 2026, with 221 preliminary tornado reports by the end of July, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. This figure is more than four times the state's long-term annual average of 54 tornadoes and has already surpassed the previous record of 142 tornadoes set in 2024. Meteorologists attribute this spike to weather patterns favoring storm development farther north, shifting tornado activity from the traditional Tornado Alley states of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas to the Midwest. Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, and Iowa have also seen increased activity, but Illinois leads the nation by a significant margin. Experts suggest this trend may indicate a broader eastward shift in tornado activity toward the Midwest and Deep South.
