U.S. Citizenship Remains Crucial for Puerto Ricans, Even Among Independence Supporters
A recent survey conducted in Puerto Rico revealed that U.S. citizenship is highly valued by the vast majority of its residents, including a significant portion of those who favor independence. The survey, which polled 1,138 voters, indicated that approximately 85% consider their U.S. citizenship either 'very important' (60%) or 'important' (15%). Notably, nearly 40% of individuals who support independence still view their U.S. citizenship as important or very important. This sentiment is further underscored by the fact that 26% of Independence Party members described their U.S. citizenship as 'very important,' with an additional 13% calling it 'important.' Only 6% of all poll participants stated that U.S. citizenship was not important to them. This data highlights a complex relationship between aspirations for sovereignty and the practical benefits and perceived value of U.S. citizenship.
