U.S. Representative Lloyd Smucker Pledges Support for Chinese Human Rights Lawyer's Asylum Case
U.S. Representative Lloyd Smucker has committed to advocating for the political asylum case of Wu Shaoping, a Chinese human rights lawyer. Wu, who fled China in 2019 to escape government retaliation, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on July 15 while working as an Amazon delivery driver. His asylum application has been pending since 2020. Following his arrest, Wu was released on bond and is required to report to ICE periodically. Wu met with Representative Smucker at his East Hempfield Township district office, where Smucker pledged to inquire with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services regarding the status of Wu's case. Wu, who lives in Mountville with his wife and daughter, is authorized to work in the U.S. and has no criminal record. Representative Smucker also issued a statement condemning the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for its human rights abuses, including imprisonment, torture, and intimidation campaigns against pro-democracy lawyers and activists.
